Viking Range Burner Clicks But Will Not Light

A clicking spark proves the igniter is alive, so the fault is almost always somewhere else. How to tell a wet burner cap from a blocked port, a dead spark module or a gas valve that is not opening.

A Viking burner that clicks steadily and never lights is one of the most common calls we take in Bellevue, and it is also the one where the wrong part gets sold most often. The clicking itself is good news. It means the spark module is powered, the electrode is firing and the switch under the knob is closing. Everything electrical in the ignition chain has already proved itself before you picked up the phone.

So the fault lives somewhere between that spark and a stable flame — and there are only a handful of places it can be hiding.

What the clicking actually tells you

On a Viking sealed-burner cooktop, turning a knob to the light position closes a switch that tells the spark module to fire. The module then sparks every electrode on the manifold simultaneously, which is why one knob makes the whole cooktop tick. At the same time, the knob opens the burner valve and gas starts moving toward the port ring.

Ignition happens when three things overlap: a spark, gas at the right pressure, and air mixed in at roughly the right ratio. A steady click with no flame means the spark is present and one of the other two is not.

That narrows the problem enormously. It rules out the igniter, the module, the wiring harness and the knob switch — the four most expensive things in that circuit — and points you at the burner assembly itself or at the gas supply.

The four things that stop a lit spark becoming a flame

A wet or misaligned burner cap. By a wide margin the most common cause. Water from a boil-over, or from washing the cap and putting it back damp, sits in the recess and stops the flame carrying around the ring. A cap that is sitting a few millimetres off its locating pins does the same thing, because the flame ports no longer line up with the gas outlets. Both look identical from the front: spark, spark, spark, nothing.

Blocked burner ports. Soup, oil and cleaning residue bake into the small holes around the burner head. If the ports nearest the electrode are blocked, gas arrives everywhere except where the spark is. You will often see this as a burner that lights on high but not on simmer, because the low-flame ports are the first to clog.

A misaligned or fouled electrode. The electrode tip should sit a few millimetres from the burner head, clean and dry. Carbon build-up, a cracked ceramic insulator or a tip that has been knocked sideways while cleaning will spark to the wrong place. You can usually hear this: the click sounds hollow or muffled rather than sharp.

Gas not arriving. If the burner has never lit since an appliance was moved, since a remodel, or since the gas was shut off for work, suspect the supply first. A partially closed shut-off valve behind the range, an air-locked line after service, or on rare occasions a manifold pressure problem will all give you a healthy spark and no flame.

Checks worth doing before you call

These take ten minutes and solve a real proportion of Bellevue call-outs before anyone gets dispatched.

  1. Turn the burner off and let everything cool. Lift the cap and the burner head clear.
  2. Dry both thoroughly, including the underside of the cap. If either has been washed recently, leave them somewhere warm for an hour.
  3. Hold the head up to a light. You should see daylight through every port. Clear any that are blocked with a pin, working from the outside in.
  4. Look at the electrode. It should be clean, dry and pointing at the burner head with a small, even gap. Wipe it with a dry cloth — not a wet one, and not with an abrasive.
  5. Reseat the head and cap. Both have locating pins or notches; the cap should sit flat and not rock when you touch it.
  6. Check the other burners. If every burner has stopped lighting at once, the problem is almost certainly gas supply rather than four simultaneous burner faults.

If the burner lights after that, the fault was mechanical and you are finished. If it still clicks and does nothing, the next stage needs a meter and a manometer.

When it is a valve or module fault

Two failures do genuinely need parts, and both are diagnosable rather than guessable.

A failing gas valve is the one people are most often sold and least often need. The valve behind the knob can wear so that it no longer opens fully at the light position, which produces a burner that clicks endlessly on ignition but works fine once lit from a match. That distinction is the tell: if a match lights it instantly and the flame is normal, gas is reaching the burner at the running position but not at the ignition position.

A failing spark module usually shows itself differently from what people expect. It rarely goes silent. More often it sparks weakly, sparks continuously after the burner has lit, or keeps clicking with all knobs in the off position. That last symptom — clicking with nothing switched on — almost always means moisture has tracked into a switch or the module has failed internally, and it is worth attention promptly because the module runs constantly in that state.

Manifold pressure is the third possibility and the one we check with gauges. Viking professional ranges expect a specific pressure at the manifold, and an appliance converted between natural gas and propane without the correct orifices will light poorly, burn yellow, or refuse to light at simmer. That is a rating-plate check, not a guess.

What a Bellevue call-out looks like

A range ignition diagnostic here runs about an hour. We test the module output, check the electrode gap against spec, pull and inspect every burner head, and put a manometer on the manifold to confirm supply pressure against the rating plate. You get told which of those readings is out of range and what it costs to correct before anything is ordered.

Most of these calls end with a cleaned burner, a reseated cap and a working range. The ones that need parts usually need one part, not four — and knowing which one is the whole job.

Follow-up questions

  • Is it safe to keep pressing the knob while it clicks?

    For a few seconds, no more. If the burner has not lit within about five seconds, turn the knob off, wait a minute for the gas to clear the area and try again. Repeated long attempts let unburned gas pool under the cooktop, and that is the one genuinely unsafe part of this fault.

  • Why do all the burners click when only one is turned on?

    That is normal on most Viking cooktops. One spark module fires every electrode on the manifold at once, so hearing four clicks when you turn one knob does not mean four faults. It also means a single wet burner can make the whole cooktop click continuously.

  • Can I clean the burner ports myself?

    Yes. Lift the cap and head off when the range is cold, and clear each port with a sewing pin or a straightened paperclip. Do not use a wooden toothpick, which snaps off inside the port, and never enlarge a port with a drill bit — the port size sets the flame shape.
